After sitting idle since 2005, HudBay Minerals Inc. has officially completed the refurbishment of the New Britannia mill in Snow Lake to handle ore from its nearby Lalor mine.
At the official reopening event in Snow Lake on Tuesday, company officials showed off the new gold plant and new copper-flotation facility.
HudBay acquired the mill from its former owners in 2015 for US$12.3 million. Company officials have not disclosed the investment in refurbishing the facility, but Ralph Eichler, agriculture and resource development minister, said, “HudBay’s expansion of its Snow Lake operations over the next few years is good news for northern communities, the mining industry and the province as a whole.”
Annual gold production from Lalor and the Snow Lake operations is expected to increase to over 180,000 ounces during the first six full years of New Britannia’s operation at an average sustaining cash cost of $788 per ounce of gold.
HudBay will benefit from deducting processing allowances from profits when calculating taxes owing. HudBay’s’s expansion is supported by the provincial government incentives including an additional processing allowance.
“We are proud of the New Britannia project and operating teams for completing construction activities ahead of the original timelines and achieving a successful ramp up to first gold pour,” said Peter Kukielski, HudBay’s president and CEO.
“This is a major growth milestone for HudBay and our Manitoba business as it marks the beginning of the transition of our Lalor mine to a primary gold operation.”
