Another Winnipeg used book shop plans to close.

Family Book Exchange at 519 St. Mary’s Rd. will soon close its doors after 50 years, according to a message posted to its website last week.

“All books are being sold at $1 each to clear inventory,” the message reads.

The shop carries general and genre fiction, such as western, science fiction, horror, fantasy and mystery, as well as children’s books.

The shop’s owners could not be reached for comment on Monday. It’s unclear when the store will close.

The pending closure follows the owner of a South Osborne area book store announcing he’s set to retire.

Gary Nerman, the 68-year-old owner of Nerman’s Books and Collectibles at 700 Osborne St., plans to sell off as much stock as he can before his shop closes at the end of March.

“There comes a time you should retire — so that’s it,” he said recently.

Nerman said he has about 103,000 books and vintage magazines — he hopes to sell about half during his liquidation sale. He plans to donate the rest to charity.

“They’re good, we have a great stock,” Nerman said of the books he hopes to donate to charity.

The rare book shop was situated in the South Osborne neighbourhood since 1996. Nerman bought the building at 700 Osborne St. that houses the store in 2005. The owner of the neighbouring Park Theatre has purchased the building and plans to renovate it for a new venture, slated to open in the fall.
