PORTER Airlines is expanding its presence in Winnipeg with a daily round trip to Ottawa.

The Toronto-based airliner announced it will shuttle passengers between the two cities beginning May 16, 2024. Roundtrip fares will start at $525.

The news comes just months after Porter flew its first plane out of Winnipeg’s airport. It began its route to Toronto from the city in September.

“We’re excited to see Porter Airlines grow their presence in our community,” Nick Hays, president of the Winnipeg Airports Authority, said in a news release.

Porter is known for free wine and beer in glasses, free Wi-Fi and a lack of middle seats. It’s expanded its network since starting with turboprop aircraft at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport in 2006.

Travellers on the Winnipeg-Ottawa route will take an Embraer E195-E2 plane. Porter plans to acquire 50 new planes by the end of 2024.

Flights to Winnipeg from Ottawa will leave at 9 a.m. eastern time.

Flights to Ottawa will depart Winnipeg at 11:40 a.m. central time. Travellers can then connect to cities including New York, Toronto, St. John’s and Boston.

“Consistent connectivity between Winnipeg and Ottawa-Gatineau is paramount for both business and leisure travellers,” Mark Laroche, Ottawa International Airport Authority’s president, said in a news release.
