TWO prominent Manitoba entrepreneurs are joining the Manitoba Business Hall of Fame.

Jim Gauthier, founder of Jim Gauthier Automotive Group, and David Johnston, owner of national insurance administrator Johnston Group, will be honoured next April as Hall of Fame inductees.

The Manitoba Business Hall of Fame began in 2011; 36 Manitobans have been recognized. JA Manitoba, a non-profit offering business education programs for youth, created the award and ensuing annual gala.

“Both (Gauthier and Johnston), over the lifetime of their business careers, just exemplified… entrepreneurship, leadership and really fantastic management skills,” said Greg Leipsic, president of JA Manitoba.

Nine board members review nominations for the Business Hall of Fame. Leadership and philanthropy are among the categories honourees must succeed in, Leipsic explained.

“Both of these gentlemen are… well-known for giving to countless charities,” he said.

Gauthier was named Manitoba’s philanthropist of the year in 2019. During the same year, Johnston received the André Mailhot award, United Way Canada’s highest honour, given to one volunteer annually.

Gauthier caught the Hall of Fame board’s eye for growing his business over several decades. The automotive sector has undergone consolidation; Jim Gauthier’s company has “continued to expand,” Leipsic said.

Johnston Group calls more than 30,000 businesses clients and processes 3,000 claims daily.

Johnston has “taken that company to just incredible heights,” Leipsic said.

“He’s really set the bar so high for that industry,” he continued. “It’s just a great, great Manitoba success story.”

Neither Gauthier nor Johnston could be reached by print deadline.

The pair will be celebrated during the Hall of Fame’s 10th gala, held at the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre, Leipsic said.

Tickets are $300. Proceeds go to JA Manitoba’s financial literacy programming for youth.
