TORONTO – Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:
Indigo shareholder meeting
Shareholders of Indigo Books & Music will meet on Monday morning to vote on a deal that would see the company taken private by Trilogy Retail Holdings Inc. and Trilogy Investments L.P. Trilogy is owned by Onex Corp. founder and chairman Gerald Schwartz, who holds 56 per cent of Indigo’s shares. He is the spouse of Indigo founder and CEO Heather Reisman, who holds almost five per cent of the company’s shares.
Bank earnings
Canada’s big banks will report their second-quarter results this week. Scotiabank will report its results on Tuesday, followed by National Bank of Canada and BMO Financial Group on Wednesday. CIBC and Royal Bank of Canada will report their results on Thursday.
Gildan meeting
Gildan Activewear Inc. will hold its annual meeting of shareholders on Tuesday. The meeting comes after CEO Vince Tyra and the board of directors resigned last week under pressure from a dissident group of shareholders, clearing the way for the return of co-founder Glenn Chamandy as chief executive. The two sides had been set to face off at the meeting.
Economic chat
Former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz and former federal finance minister John Manley participate in a discussion examining Canada’s current economic landscape on Thursday. The talk in Toronto hosted by the Economic Club of Canada comes ahead of the Bank of Canada’s next interest rate decision set for June 5.
GDP report
Statistics Canada will release its March and first-quarter GDP figures on Friday. The agency’s preliminary estimate for March indicated real GDP was essentially unchanged for the month as gains in utilities and real estate and rental and leasing were offset by decreases in manufacturing and retail trade.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 26, 2024.
