TORONTO – Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:
CPKC results
On Tuesday, Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. will report its second-quarter earnings and hold a conference call after markets close. Rail workers at CPKC as well as competitor CN Rail voted last month to reauthorize strikes at both companies if new collective agreements can’t be hashed out.
May GDP report
Statistics Canada will release its gross domestic product report for May on Wednesday. The agency’s advance estimate indicated real GDP rose 0.1 per cent in May, as strength in manufacturing, real estate and finance and insurance was partially offset by weakness in retail trade and wholesale trade.
Telecom earnings
Earnings from Canada’s major telecommunications companies will continue this week, with Bell Canada-parent company BCE Inc. reporting its second-quarter results Thursday followed by Telus Corp. on Friday. Telus announced last week it inked a deal with WestJet to provide free internet service aboard flights for members of the airline’s loyalty program.
TC Energy results
TC Energy Corp. will report its second-quarter earnings on Thursday. Earlier this month, a trade tribunal tossed out the Calgary-based company’s claim to US$15 billion in damages, which it launched in 2021 to seek compensation after its proposed Keystone XL pipeline project was scuttled by U.S. President Joe Biden.
Canada Goose AGM
On Friday, Canada Goose Holdings Inc. will hold its annual general meeting after posting its first-quarter results the day prior. The Toronto-based luxury apparel maker said in March that it was laying off 17 per cent of its global corporate workforce to put the company “in a better position for scaling.”
