The subject of several rumours over the years, a fourth Costco store is finally in the works for the Winnipeg area, targeting a late-2025 opening.

Commercial real estate firm Shindico has announced Friday a new location of the popular big box retailer will be opening at its Westport Festival site on the north side of Portage Avenue, immediately west of the Birchwood Auto Park.

The 167,000-square-foot store (which will include a large gas bar on site) brings a big name to Westport Festival — a 72-acre site that is expected to include about one million square feet of retail and multifamily residential space and, potentially, a hotel.

Commercial real estate firm Shindico announced Friday that a new Costco store will be opening in late 2025 on the north side of Portage Avenue, immediately west of the Birchwood Auto Park. It will be the popular big box retail chain’s fourth such location in the Winnipeg area.

Although Westport will not be an enclosed mall, it will rival the likes of St. Vital Centre in size.

Two apartment towers have already gone up at the northern end of the site.

“We have not signed anybody yet, pending this announcement, but there will be some more retail,” Shindico founder and chairman Sandy Shindleman said. “We are hoping there will be a hotel. We have had interest, we’ll just have to see who’s ready to move forward.”

Although the U.S.-headquartered company has not confirmed it, there has been plenty of rumours Costco’s very busy St. James Street location will be converted to a Costco Business Centre. Such versions of its stores stock products in large quantities aimed primarily at convenience stores, caterers, restaurants and hotels.
