TORONTO – Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Interest rates

The Bank of Canada is set to announce its latest interest rate decision and monetary policy report on Wednesday. The central bank held its key rate at 2.75 per cent in April and June. With last month’s jobs figures showing a surprise gain and core inflation levels holding steady at around three per cent, economists broadly expect the bank will continue its holding pattern.

CPKC results

Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. will release its second-quarter results and hold a conference call after the markets close on Wednesday. In May, an arbitrator’s ruling established two new collective bargaining agreements covering thousands of workers at the Calgary-based railroad.

GDP

Statistics Canada will release its figures for gross domestic product for May as well as its flash estimate for the economy in June on Thursday. The agency said last month that real GDP edged 0.1 per cent lower in April and that its advance estimate for May pointed to a similar decline.

Trade negotiation deadline

Friday marks the deadline in Canada’s trade talks with the U.S., as President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 35 per cent tariffs on a wide variety of Canadian goods if an agreement isn’t in place by Aug. 1. Last week, Prime Minister Mark Carney described ongoing negotiations as “complex,” adding Ottawa would “use all the time that’s necessary” to reach a deal seeking to stabilize the trade relationship between Canada and the U.S.

Enbridge results

Enbridge Inc. is set to report its second-quarter results and hold an analyst conference call on Friday morning. The company announced last week it is adding to its renewable energy portfolio with a US$900-million solar project in Texas that will supply the data centre operations of Meta Platforms Inc.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 27, 2025.
