MONTREAL – Hitachi Energy is investing $270 million to expand its large power transformer manufacturing facility in Quebec.

The company says the investment will nearly triple the annual production capacity at the site near Montreal in Varennes, Que., and create about 500 new jobs.

Hitachi says the Varennes facility is one of the largest manufacturers of high-voltage direct current transformers in the world.

The expansion is part of the company’s plan to increase its global transformer production capacity.

Carla Vicente, country managing director for Hitachi Energy in Canada, says the investment will help the company meet fast-growing demand for large power transformers, reactors and HVDC technology.

The investment follows $140 million announced by the company last year to expand operations at the facility.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Sept. 29, 2025.
