A Saskatoon-based private equity firm has earmarked $5 million for investing in small Manitoba businesses.

Basin Capital Inc. will ultimately spend $10 million in the keystone province. Half that money comes from the Manitoba First Fund, which was established to draw outside venture capital.

The Basin Manitoba Limited Partnership — a branch of Basin Capital Inc. — will seek companies with revenues below $10 million and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization under $2 million.

It’ll target a 15 per cent to 20 per cent return on investment before leverage.

Just $10 million of the Manitoba First Fund is left unclaimed (or claimed but unannounced). The provincial government launched the $100 million fund in 2022.

The Manitoba First Fund has inked a number of deals this year, including to direct $5 million to the Vancouver-based Emend Vision Fund and another $5 million to SVG Ventures Thrive, which is located in Silicon Valley.
