TORONTO – The provincial agency that runs GO Transit says trains will continue to run on a modified schedule into Wednesday after a train derailment near Toronto’s Union Station caused major disruptions on Monday.
Metrolinx says the modified train service operated as intended on Tuesday, with some delays across the Lakeshore East and West lines.
Thousands of commuters experienced long delays on Monday after a GO train leaving Union Station derailed at low speed and made contact with a track switch, which caused signal system disruptions across the network.
Metrolinx says the train was put back on the tracks and the majority of necessary track repairs have been completed, but the signal system sustained “significant damage” that still needs repairs.
It says those repairs will take longer and will likely impact train schedules “into the coming days.”
The derailment also caused a temporary suspension of the UP Express train service between Union Station and Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday.
Metrolinx says 30-minute UP Express train service will continue on Tuesday and return to 15-minute intervals on Wednesday.
