SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA – A man arrested in December in Abbotsford, B.C., has been charged with extortion using a firearm after being linked to two other cases in the Metro Vancouver city of Surrey.

Police in both jurisdictions say 22-year-old Gursewak Singh is also facing charges of possession and discharge of a firearm in the attacks.

The attacks happened over a four-day period starting Dec. 14 when a business in Surrey that had previously received extortion threats was shot at in the overnight hours.

Another Surrey business was attacked the next night and two vehicles in its parking lot were set ablaze.

A third attack was reported in Abbotsford on Dec. 17 involving a shooting at a business leading police to identify and locate a suspect vehicle and arrest Singh.

Singh was initially charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm in the Abbotsford shooting, but investigators say they have since linked the man to the two Surrey attacks, leading to the additional charges.

The accused is set to appear in court on Friday and remains in police custody.

Surrey has been among the hardest hit communities in Canada in the recent wave of extortion violence targeting the South Asian community, with police reporting 108 such cases so far this year.
