VANCOUVER – Silvercorp Metals Inc. says it is slowing work at its Ying and GC mining operations in China to implement new safety systems following recent changes to government requirements.

The company says the work is expected to cost about US$5.5 million and take roughly 50 days to complete.

It is also spending another US$6 million on other improvements and equipment upgrades.

Silvercorp says the Chinese government issued new safety requirements after a fatal accident at a coal mine in May.

It says mine safety authorities have launched broad cross-sector inspections to prevent similar incidents at metal and non-metal mines.

In addition to its operations in China, Silvercorp has projects in Ecuador, Bolivia and Kyrgyzstan.
