WINNIPEG – The Insurance Bureau of Canada says severe June storms in Manitoba and Saskatchewan caused more than $728 million in insured damage.
It says the costs came after the storms brought hail, tornadoes, high winds and torrential rain that led to flash flooding.
Manitoba Public Insurance says the storm blew through the record number of claims for a single weather event with more than 30,000 claims opened.
It says the previous record was 24,000 for a hailstorm in 1996.
Manitoba was also hit by another major storm system at the end of June that led to widespread flooding in the Parkland Region.
The heavy rainfall has led the Assiniboine River to rise quickly in the past week around Brandon, but the city says its dike system is holding and water levels have started to fall.
