TORONTO – Unifor and General Motors have agreed on tentative labour contracts for more than 4,600 autoworkers.
Unifor National President Lana Payne says the agreements deliver strong increases in wages and benefits for workers at GM facilities in Ontario, including the Oshawa assembly plant, the CAMI facility in Ingersoll as well as operations in St. Catharines and Woodstock.
Talks between Unifor and GM Canada began earlier this month after the union reached an agreement with Ford that included three per cent annual pay increases and a renewal of a no-closure agreement.
Unifor’s top bargainer with GM says the tentative deals are in line with the pattern set by the Ford agreement.
In pattern bargaining, a union negotiates with one company to set terms that it hopes to replicate with other companies in the same sector.
The GM labour contracts must still be ratified by Unifor members.
The union says ratification meetings are scheduled for Aug. 29 and 30.
Jack Uppal, president and managing director at GM Canada, says the deal builds on GM’s investments in Canadian manufacturing but further details of the agreements will be shared later to respect the ratification process.
The union is set to move onto labour talks with Stellantis next amid headwinds for the auto sector, including U.S. tariffs, the Trump administration’s decision not to extend the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement, and the introduction of Chinese electric vehicles into Canada.
