TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index fell nearly 600 points on Wednesday, weighed down by losses in the basic materials sector, while U.S. stock markets also fell.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 584.18 points at 35,751.43.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 352.10 points at 51,511.59. The S&P 500 index was down 58.61 points at 7,706.03, while the Nasdaq composite was down 308.24 points at 26,936.04.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.94 cents US compared with 71.10 cents US on Tuesday.

The November crude oil contract was up US$1.64 at US$92.16 per barrel.

The December gold contract was down US$58.00 at US$4,318.40 an ounce.
