BlackBerry reports Q2 profit and revenue up from year ago, raises guidance

TORONTO – BlackBerry Ltd. reported a second-quarter profit of US$33.9 million compared with a profit of US$13.3 million a year ago and raised its outlook as its revenue rose 26 per cent.
The Ontario-based company, which keeps its books in U.S. dollars, says its profit amounted to five cents US per diluted share for the quarter ended Aug. 31 compared with a profit of two cents US per diluted share a year earlier.
On an adjusted basis, BlackBerry says it earned seven cents US per share in its latest quarter compared with an adjusted profit of four cents US per share in the same quarter last year.
Revenue for the quarter totalled US$163.3 million, up from US$129.6 million.
The increase came as QNX revenue totalled U$80.3 million, up from US$63.1 million a year ago, while secure communications revenue amounted to US$60.9 million, up from US$59.9 million. Licensing revenue was US$22.1 million, up from US$6.6 million a year ago.
In its outlook, BlackBerry says it now expects revenue for its 2027 financial year to total between US$616 million and US$636 million, up from earlier expectations for US$594 million to US$621 million. Adjusted earnings per share are now expected to be 19 to 22 cents US per share for the year, up from earlier guidance for 16 to 20 cents US per share.
