S&P/TSX composite down in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets higher

TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index was down in late-morning trading despite strength in the energy sector as the price of oil moved higher, while U.S. stock markets were up.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 76.66 points at 35,383.61.

The move came as the November crude oil contract rose US$2.12 to US$91.50 per barrel.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 50.28 points at 51,400.20. The S&P 500 index was up 44.05 points at 7,714.89, while the Nasdaq composite was up 256.64 points at 27,054.18.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.43 cents US compared with 70.48 cents US on Tuesday.

The December gold contract was up US$13.40 at US$4,193.10 an ounce.
