S&P/TSX composite falls more than 600 points, U.S. stock markets also negative

TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index fell more than 600 points Wednesday, weighed down by losses in the basic materials sector, while U.S. markets were also negative. 

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 607.65 points at 35,041.86.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 341.41 points at 51,179.87. The S&P 500 index was down 17.16 points at 7,801.77, while the Nasdaq composite was down 61.20 points at 27,538.69.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.14 cents US compared with 70.29 cents US on Tuesday.

The November crude oil contract was down US$1.16 at US$88.28 per barrel.    

The December gold contract was down US$46.40 at US$4,140.70 an ounce.
