Miraculins Inc. has teamed up with a large Texas chain of supermarket/pharmacy stores to launch its PreVu skin cholesterol test in the U.S.

This morning the Winnipeg company announced a deal with H-E-B, the largest food retailer in south and central Texas that will see Miraculins’ PreVu non-invasive skin cholesterol point of care test in 20 H-E-B Texas store locations during the fourth quarter of 2013.

H-E-B, has 340 stores in Texas and northern Mexico and more than 76,000 employees.

The retail chain promotes “Second Saturday Screenings” on its website, where its outlets offer a series of medical tests once a month including a blood test for cholesterol for $29.99.

In Canada the PreVu tests are available at London Drugs stores in western Canada and PharmaChoice in eastern Canada.

The PreVu point of care test helps people better understand and manage their risk of coronary artery disease. More than 1.5 million heart attacks occur in the U.S. each year, resulting in over 500,000 deaths.

Miraculins CEO Christopher Moreau said, “This phase one launch — leading to the potential of PreVu POC Testing Centres being located throughout H-E-B’s network of stores — represents an important step towards realizing greater heart health education, risk assessment and prevention for Texans and all Americans at risk.”
