The last of five Target stores slated for the Manitoba market — a newly built, stand-alone store adjacent to Polo Park shopping centre — is now open for business.

The sprawling, 107,000-square-foot store is one of three new Target outlets that officially opened Friday. The others are in Ottawa and Mississauga, Ont.

The Polo Park store is noteworthy for several reasons. Not only is it one of the largest Target stores in Canada, it’s also one of only two that have been built on top of a one-storey, open-air parkade. The other is in Toronto.

JOE BRYKSA / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Target quietly opened its store next to Polo Park shopping centre on Friday. It was one of three new outlets that officially opened Friday, including two in Ontario.

Friday’s opening was a low-key affair, marked only by Target Canada issuing a news release announcing the three new stores were open for business.

“The opening of these three stores marks another important milestone for Target Canada,” company president Mark Schindele stated in the news release. “As we head into the holiday season, we’re thrilled to offer our guests additional locations to find exclusive merchandise, great value and a unique shopping experience.”

The Polo Park store is the anchor tenant in the new Plaza at Polo Park retail/office/restaurant development under construction on the former stadium site immediately north of the Polo Park mall.

Not only is it the development’s only tenant so far, it’s also Target’s only stand-alone store in Manitoba. The other four are former Zellers stores connected to shopping centres — Kildonan Place, Grant Park and Southdale centres in Winnipeg and the Shoppers Mall in Brandon. The Grant Park store opened last fall, and the other three opened in May of last year.

The Minneapolis-based department-store giant began its aggressive expansion into the Canadian market with 2011’s purchase of the rights to 189 Zellers leaseholds from Zellers’ parent — Hudson’s Bay Co. — for $1.83 billion.

After reviewing all of the sites, it decided to keep 124 and sell the rest.

After undergoing extensive renovations, 124 stores were opened last year, and another nine were added this year. The company said the three that opened Friday are the last to be opened this year. It now has 133 stores across the country.

The Polo Park store employs about 150 people and features a licensed Starbucks outlet and an in-store pharmacy. In-store promotions were to held throughout the day to celebrate the official opening.
