Winnipeg is losing its last Marketplace grocery store.

Federated Co-operatives Ltd. confirmed its Marketplace store in North Kildonan, in the McIvor Mall at 1795 Henderson Hwy., is closing.

The news comes two weeks after the co-op made a decision to rebuild its Marketplace in St. Norbert but under a different name and run by another co-op.

Federated Co-op provided few details on the Marketplace closing except to say the store’s lease is expiring and the co-op decided not to renew.

It said many factors go into a decision to close a location, including sales.

It’s the second grocery on Henderson Highway to close in recent years. A Safeway at Henderson and Kimberley Avenue closed after the Sobeys Inc. purchase of Safeway Inc. in 2013 for $5.8 billion. That building is still vacant.

The Marketplace is a small grocery, like the Safeway that closed, compared to the larger Sobeys in the Northdale Shopping Centre and Safeway in River East Plaza, both on Henderson, that remain in operation.

A Federated Co-op spokesman said the Marketplace will close within a couple months. More details will be posted when they are available, he said.

Federated Co-op still has Marketplace stores in Lorette, Selkirk and Stonewall. The co-op said those stores are not slated for closure.
