Hey there, time traveller!

Opening an ice cream shop on the first day of winter might sound like weird timing to most people, but the family behind Chaeban’s Ice Cream wouldn’t have it any other way.
After months spent perfecting 14 different ice cream flavours, beginning today the shop’s doors open for business in South Osborne.
The new store, which is in the vicinity of the former Banana Boat Ice Cream location on Osborne Street, specializes in premium hard ice cream made in-house from scratch, with ingredients produced or grown in Manitoba.
“It was really important for me to open something for the South Osborne community because they are the people who helped bring my wife’s family here,” said Joseph Chaeban, owner of the shop, in a press release.
His wife’s family, who are Syrian, were only able to join them in Canada after the South Osborne Syrian Refugee Initiative raised enough money to bring 13 of them over from the war-torn country.
“I had job offers in other provinces, but then I asked myself, ‘How can I leave this beautiful place?’ So instead my wife, Zainab, and I opened our own business to ensure we could always be a part of this community.”
The plan wasn’t originally to open on the first day of winter, but following delays in October and November that’s how it’s worked out. As Winnipeggers, the family has decided to embrace it.
Flavours unique to the new shop will include Baba Beet (made with Manitoba beets, sour cream, orange zest and poppy seeds) and Abir Al Sham (an Arabic recipe with rosewater, pistachios, cashews and orchid flower powder). Before opening its doors today at 11 a.m., the shop will hold a short media and ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by exclusive tastings.
“When it comes to explaining how much opening Chaeban Ice Cream means to me, I get so excited I forget how to put my words together,” said Zainab Ali, co-owner of the shop, in the press release.
“Opening an ice cream shop is an opportunity to show much I’m thankful and proud to be in Winnipeg — the city that has shown me the most kindness and humanity. And what better way to show that than by serving ice cream and putting smiles on people’s faces?”
Business hours will be 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, although it will be closed on Christmas.
