Winnipeg-based Silver Jeans has launched a line of high-tech blue jeans. They’re called Infinite Fit Denim and one pair fits up to four waist sizes.

“It’s a culmination of technology for us, to make them fit right, to fit so many sizes, and to look like your favourite pair of blue jeans,” said Michael Silver, the CEO of Silver Jeans Co.

He and his crew have spent about 10 years creating their Infinite Fit offering. The jeans come in four sizes — small through extra-large — which fit people who take size 24 up to size 39, according to the company.

“Everybody makes stretch denim jeans… but it’s really difficult to make stretch denim jeans that stretch out and don’t come back, or come back too much,” Silver said.

The pants are meant to form to their user’s body, regardless of whether they’ve grown or shrunk. Janice Marks, the company’s vice-president of design, had an idea to develop a new fabric nearly a decade ago, Silver said. The material has a mix of cotton and polyester yarn that’s been woven in “a very specific way,” Silver said.

The fabric stretches across the leg vertically and horizontally.

“You could go out in it, or you could stay home in it, or you could do yoga in it, or you could go to a dinner,” Silver said.

Making the jeans look exactly like the well-known Silver Jeans brand is what took the longest, Silver said. But, the $88 jeans are now online and will be hitting stores, including Mark’s and Bootlegger, soon.

“The timing was perfect,” Silver said. “Everybody was stuck at home. Comfort becomes the kind of rule of the day.”

Cozy fits have gained traction during the pandemic and likely won’t go away soon, according to Michelle Maynard, a fashion instructor at MC College.

“Loungewear or comfortable wear will always be a trend,” she said. “I think now, especially, people have realized they want to be comfortable.”

However, many have stepped away from the 24-7 sweats and started putting on other pants, Maynard said. The future of the industry is combining both style and comfort, she said.

The Infinite Fit line is made using an eco wash, resulting in less water, according to a Silver Jeans news release.
