FINDING that perfect parking spot at the mall just got a little easier, if you’re willing to pay for it.
On Wednesday, CF Polo Park shopping mall introduced CF Park, a six-week pilot project that allows shoppers, for a $5 fee, to reserve parking spots close to an entrance.
“We’re always looking for new and innovative ideas to improve the experience for our shoppers and customers,” CF Polo Park general manager Peter Havens said.
“We were inspired thinking this was an opportunity to improve efficiency… for customers interested in this type of service.”
Reservations can be placed for a total of 24 parking spots at four locations around the mall. Reservations can be made online at cfpolopark.com or by using the CF Park app.
“We are going to have them patrolled by our security staff here as part of their regular parking lot patrols,” Havens said. “So they will be monitoring who is parked there and if they are supposed to be parked there.”
As of early Monday afternoon, only two customers had used the service.
“We knew it would be a bit quieter at the beginning and during the mid-weeks, when there is still a lot of other available parking,” Havens said, adding he expected demand to increase significantly during high-traffic periods, such as the lead-up to Christmas.
Mall staff surveyed customers over the weekend to gauge interest in the initiative, but Havens had not yet seen the results, he said.
“For sure, how often it is getting used is one aspect of the success; the other part is the overall sense if it is the right thing to do, is it what customers are looking for,” Havens said. “This is a relatively easy initiative to implement, so we will see how it goes.”
Havens said similar pilot projects were launched at CF Sherway Gardens in Toronto, just before Christmas, and last week at CF Masonville Place in London, Ont.
Management at the city’s second-largest mall, St. Vital Centre, said they were not currently considering offering reserved parking.
“But you never know… the potential is always there,” operations manager Don Lombaert said. “Never say never.”
