After slowly including more and more transaction data from brokers and agents in many towns and regions outside Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Realtors Association has changed its name to the Winnipeg Regional Real Estate Board (WRREB).
Some areas such as Steinbach have been part of the Winnipeg Multiple Listing Service (MLS) system for 15 years. But in 2019 much of the rest of southern Manitoba, all the way to the U.S. border including the growing communities of Morden, Winkler and Altona were captured in the Winnipeg board’s MLS.
After the surprisingly strong 2020 market — the best year ever, by far — the board decided to change the name now.
Peter Squire, the WRREB’s vice-president of external relations and market intelligence said the new name is a reflection of the outreach into the rural regions that has been going on for some time.
“It is a more inclusive name to more accurately represent who we now are going into 2021,” he said.
Among other things more broker and agent offices from more regions – including all the way up both sides of Lake Winnipeg — are reporting into the MLS system.
Squire said the addition of more rural reporting the past couple of years has not skewed the comparative numbers and the decision was made to change the name now because 2020 was the first full year of many new brokerage offices participating in the Winnipeg MLS system.
Marina James, CEO of the Winnipeg Regional Real Estate Board, said, “Changing our operating name speaks directly to the changing housing landscape and our leadership in the real estate industry including market and data reporting, technology products and services, innovation and realtor professionalism.”
