The short and highly regarded history of Fazzo Café and Bistro will come to an end Monday.

That’s when Kaye’s Auction hopes to sell off all the restaurant’s equipment and furnishings, after the provincial sheriff’s department seized that equipment.

According to court records, the Corydon bistro that was built on the site of a former pharmacy at Corydon Avenue and Wentworth Street owes $83,158.65 to the Women’s Enterprise Centre. A writ of seizure and sale was obtained late last month.

The bistro opened in early 2009 and, by June, received a four-star review from Free Press food critic Marion Warhaft.

Then the restaurant attempted to get a permit for an outdoor patio, but by early 2010 it was closed.

At the time, one of the owners, Rhea Collison, said the idea was to reopen with more of a lower-priced, café-style menu.

Scott Jocelyn, executive director of the Manitoba Restaurant & Foodservices Association, said it’s always painful when a restaurant operator is forced to close.

“We were very surprised after they had opened, set up a sweet-looking place, then all of sudden it was closed,” he said. “Corydon is still a busy spot for restaurants, but business is flat (across the city) and operators have tightened their belts and are being very, very cautious.”

The auction sale of the equipment is to be held on Monday at the Corydon location. It is being sold en block, with the auctioneer looking for one purchaser for the entire lot. The equipment to be sold includes two commercial gas ranges, a gas range with grill, a Vulcan deep fryer, a Berkel meat slicer, a Robot ultra mixer, three coolers and a seven-foot walk-in cooler as well as assorted chairs, tables, pots, pans, utensils, flatware, glassware and cutlery.
