A man is facing charges after eluding police during an early morning crime spree in Leaf Rapids on Saturday.
RCMP in the community were sent to a home on Wapoos Bay at about 2:05 a.m. after a suspect known to the victim entered the home armed with a sawed-off firearm and knife and tried to steal money and ammunition from him. The victim was assaulted, RCMP said.
The suspect fled and could not be found.
A woman was assaulted on Nisku Bay at about 5:30 a.m. Like the first victim, she is 18 years old, knows the victim and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. RCMP said.
Officers were then sent to a third crime scene.
“While officers were on scene, it was learned that the suspect had gone to the neighbouring residence immediately after the assault and pointed a firearm at the neighbour, also known to the suspect, before fleeing the scene,” RCMP said.
Mounties were sent back to the first home on Wapoos Bay at 5:45 a.m. after the house was set on fire. A suspect was seen exiting the home as the fire started. The victim from the first incident was no longer inside, and a suspect fled the scene, RCMP said.
RCMP were told Sunday that the suspect wanted to turn himself in to police at a home on Mukasew Bay. They arrested a 24-year-old man there.
The Leaf Rapids resident is facing 21 charges, including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, breaking and entering, careless use of a firearm and pointing a firearm.
He remains in custody.
