UK Athletics fined $471K over ‘wholly avoidable’ death of Paralympian

Danica Kirka, The Associated Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 7:20 AM CDT

LONDON (AP) — UK Athletics, the governing body of British track and field, was fined 350,000 pounds ($471,000) on Tuesday after pleading guilty to corporate manslaughter in the case of a Paralympian who died when a practice cage fell on him during training.

Abdullah Hayayei, 36, was preparing to represent the United Arab Emirates when he was hit on the head by a metal pole during the accident at Newham Leisure Centre in east London on July 11, 2017.

Judge Richard Marks said Hayayei’s death was “tragic, untimely and wholly avoidable” as he announced the sentence during a hearing at Central London Criminal Court on Tuesday.

Keith Davies, 79, who was head of sport for the 2017 world para athletics championships in London, was ordered to perform 175 hours of unpaid work after he plead guilty to a health and safety charge.

Brisbane begins work on the 2032 Olympics main stadium at Victoria Park after protesters moved

John Pye, The Associated Press 4 minute read Monday, Jun. 1, 2026

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Protesters have been moved along and excavation machinery has been moved in as work on the main stadium for the 2032 Olympics got under way Monday, almost five years after Brisbane was awarded rights to the Summer Games.

The Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority took ownership of the inner city Victoria Park site from the Brisbane City Council at midnight, and temporary perimeter fencing was erected ahead of construction on the 3.6 billion Australian dollar ($2.6 billion) Brisbane Olympics main stadium.

There was a heavy security presence again Monday, days after Queensland state police arrested five people and council staff began dismantling protest camp sites on the parklands.

A small group of activists was relocated from inside to outside the perimeter fencing in the parklands just after midnight.

Protesters arrested at site of proposed main stadium for 2032 Brisbane Olympics

The Associated Press 2 minute read Friday, May. 29, 2026

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Five people were arrested Friday and other protesters moved away from the site of a proposed main stadium for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics which has become the center point over the future of a heritage-listed park in the city.

The dispute centers around Victoria Park, the site of the proposed 3.6 billion Australian dollar ($2.6 billion) Brisbane Olympics main stadium.

The five people were taken into custody for obstructing and assaulting police officers, a police spokesperson said, adding that one of those arrested was later released without charge.

“Queensland Police Service officers are supporting partner agencies as they undertake engagement, offers of support services and compliance action, if necessary, with a focus on maintaining community safety and ensuring the safety of all involved,” the spokesperson said.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry says sports cut from 2032 Brisbane Games could return in future

Graham Dunbar, The Associated Press 5 minute read Wednesday, May. 27, 2026

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Sports and medal events cut from the 2032 Brisbane Olympics program will have a path to return at future Summer Games, IOC President Kirsty Coventry told sports leaders on Wednesday.

Coventry’s reassurance to the annual meeting of Summer Games sports bodies came after she warned in February of “uncomfortable” talks ahead to make future Olympic hosting more efficient.

The International Olympic Committee aims to finalize within months the list of sports on the Brisbane program that Coventry previously told their leaders will be fewer than the 36 being played at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“There is a path (back), it’s not just an end,” the IOC president told The Associated Press on Wednesday on the sidelines of the assembly of the summer sports group known as ASOIF.

Hockey Canada starts search for new women’s team general manager, coach

Donna Spencer, The Canadian Press 6 minute read Tuesday, May. 26, 2026

CALGARY - The Canadian women's hockey team is in search of a new general manager as well as a coach at a time when Professional Women's Hockey League teams have been scooping up candidates.

Hockey Canada announced Tuesday that general manager Gina Kingsbury will not return next season after eight years overseeing the national women's team.

Kingsbury is also GM of the PWHL's Toronto Sceptres.

Troy Ryan, who coached Canada to three world championships and an Olympic gold medal in the six years after Kingsbury promoted him, indicated after February's Milan Cortina Winter Olympics that he wouldn't continue coaching Canada's women.

Report shows uneven progress for women in Canadian sport leadership

Donna Spencer, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Tuesday, May. 26, 2026

A new report on women in Canadian sport leadership roles presents a mixed bag of progress, stalling and backtracking.

The number of women on the boards of national sports organizations, which are unpaid positions, has jumped. The number of women who are paid chief executive officers has plummeted.

Canadian Women and Sport released its 2025-26 “Women in Sport Leadership Snapshot” report Tuesday, saying women now hold a record 45 per cent of board seats and 48 per cent of board chair positions in national sport organizations.

"It really shows that the sports system is capable of change," CWS chief executive officer Allison Sandmeyer-Graves said. "This is a lot of individual organizations choosing to put the effort in to get that result."

Kerley runs 9.97 at Enhanced Games, where Kristian Gkolomeev gets a $1M bonus for swimming mark

The Associated Press 4 minute read Monday, May. 25, 2026

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Fred Kerley ran 100 meters in a pedestrian 9.97 seconds Sunday night to win the Enhanced Games in a race where the sprinters had to be placed in the starting blocks four times because of false starts and untied shoes.

Kerley, who predicted Usain Bolt's world record of 9.58 seconds would get “destroyed,” ran a time that would have placed him last at the Paris Olympics two years ago, where he ran 9.81 and won bronze.

The only athlete to win the $1 million bonus for going faster than the world record over the four hours of swimming, weightlifting and track in the specially built stadium on the Las Vegas Strip was Kristian Gkolomeev, who closed the night by swimming the 50-meter free in 20.81 seconds.

That record won't go into the books, however, because the Enhanced Games, true to its name, allows performance-enhancing drugs that are banned in mainstream sports.

After quitting hockey twice, Oakbank’s Tabin flying high as Walter Cup champ

Kati Tabin was in the midst of hugging her teammates and soaking in the moment when a stark reminder of the magnitude of the long and winding road that brought her to the pinnacle of this remarkable journey was brought to her attention yet again.

“That was just it — it was like a pinch-me moment, like Holy (crap), we did it,” Tabin said in a telephone interview over the weekend. “It was so crazy, because one of my teammates came up to me after the game and she said ‘hey, remember when you quit hockey?’

“It was just kind of funny to think about that and to think about where we are now. I’m just super grateful that I stuck with it.”

The Oakbank product has been a little busy since Wednesday night, when the Montreal Victoire became the first Canadian team to capture the Walter Cup as champions of the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

Sprinter Fred Kerley says he’s running clean at Enhanced Games, and that he’ll be at the LA Olympics

Eddie Pells, The Associated Press 7 minute read Saturday, May. 23, 2026

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sprinter Fred Kerley revealed that he is not taking performance enhancers as he embarks on the next phase of a career that officially kicks off Sunday at the Enhanced Games, where drugs are allowed.

Another surprise: The 2022 world champion at 100 meters, banned from the regular track circuit until August 2027 for missing tests required by a system he portrayed as disrespectful and intrusive, has every intention of being on another starting line.

“I will compete at the LA Olympics in 2028," he said.

When Kerley signed onto the Enhanced Games roster, he became their most recognizable name and gave the new enterprise a headliner it had been missing.

An SNL ‘All Drug Olympics?’ Not quite. But these Enhanced Games are no joke

Eddie Pells, The Associated Press 7 minute read Friday, May. 22, 2026

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The first, best and most hilarious rendition of the “All Drug Olympics” came courtesy of “Saturday Night Live."

It was 1988 when Soviet weightlifter “Sergei Akmudov,” geeked up on anabolic steroids, Nyquil and “some sort of fish paralyzer,” tried to clean and jerk 1,500 pounds — three times the existing world record — only to have his arms snap off at the shoulders.

Blood and gore gushed from where his arms used to be. Laughter cascaded as the on-site reporter, Kevin Nealon, threw it back to Dennis Miller in the studio.

It took almost 40 years, but finally, the event that tackles that age-old bar question, “What would happen if we just let them all take drugs?” has arrived.

Berlin OKs bid to rehost Olympics on or after 100th anniversary of 1936 Games under the Nazis

Ciarán Fahey, The Associated Press 3 minute read Thursday, May. 21, 2026

BERLIN (AP) — Berlin’s state parliament has given the go-ahead for the city’s bid to rehost the Olympic Games on or after the 100th anniversary of the 1936 Games staged by the Nazis.

“Our bid is a genuine promise for future generations,” Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner said during the 90-minute debate that preceded the vote Thursday. “We want positive development for Berlin.”

Wegner’s CDU political party received support from rival SPD members and the far-right AfD for the Berlin Olympic and Paralympic plans that he first presented in May last year in the same stadium where Jesse Owens defied Adolf Hitler in the 1936 Games.

Berlin’s state government approved the concept this month for a bid that relies mostly on existing sports facilities and envisages using city landmarks such as the city park at the former airport Tempelhof.

IOC urges sports to let Belarus athletes compete again without vetting as neutrals

Graham Dunbar, The Associated Press 5 minute read Thursday, May. 7, 2026

GENEVA (AP) — In a political shift Thursday, the International Olympic Committee said athletes from Belarus should once again compete with their full national identity and not be vetted for neutral status, even as the war in Ukraine continues.

Though the non-binding advice to sports governing bodies does not yet apply also to Russia, it seemed to point toward being closer to ending Russia’s isolation in Olympic circles during its war on Ukraine as the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games approaches.

Athletes from Russia and its military ally Belarus had to be approved as neutrals who did not support the war for individual events at the 2024 Paris Olympics and February’s Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. The countries were barred from all team sports at the Olympics.

“The IOC reaffirms that athletes’ participation in international competition should not be limited by the actions of their governments, including involvement in a war or conflict,” the Olympic body said.

MONTREAL - Montreal is one of four cities that will host final Olympic qualifiers ahead of the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, the International Olympic Committee unveiled Thursday.

The IOC made the announcement Thursday in Lausanne, Switzerland, though the Canadian Olympic Committee was notified earlier this week.

“It’s the return of the Olympic rings to Montreal, Quebec and Canada,” COC chief sport officer Eric Myles said.

Orlando, Tokyo and Shanghai are the other cities set to host the Olympic Q-Series, which will feature 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball, BMX freestyle, climbing, skateboarding and flag football, which will make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles.

British government eyes possible bid for Olympics in 2040s

The Associated Press 2 minute read Tuesday, May. 5, 2026

LONDON (AP) — The British government wants to get the country “event ready” to potentially host another Olympics.

Discussions are happening “about supporting potential bids” for the Olympics and Paralympics in the 2040s, as well as bids for the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup in the 2030s, according to an announcement Wednesday by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

“Initial work examining whether the UK could host the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the first time since London 2012 will assess key factors such as potential cost, socioeconomic benefit and any bid’s chance of success,” the statement read.

London has hosted the Summer Olympics three times, most recently in 2012.

If anyone knows how to make a statement, it’s Canadian Olympian Deanna Stellato-Dudek.

Not only did the 42-year-old make history in February as the oldest female figure skater to compete at the Olympic Games in almost a century, Oscar de la Renta dressed her for the occasion — in Milan, Italy, one of the great fashion capitals of the world.

“I think a partnership between haute couture and figure skating is a match made in heaven,” says Stellato-Dudek, who won three Canadian titles and the 2024 world championship with pairs partner Maxime Deschamps.

Her collaboration with the New York fashion house marked the luxury brand’s first foray into figure skating costume design.
