SENIORS have more options than ever before for housing, ranging from personal care homes to fully independent life-lease condos. But that can make it more challenging than ever to come to a decision about the future.

That’s why Age and Opportunity is organizing a pair of bus tours to a variety of seniors’ housing facilities in south Winnipeg, says Christa Derhach, outreach facilitator for the seniors’ organization.

A tour of St. Boniface and St. Vital centres runs Aug. 19, starting from the St. Vital Age and Opportunity Centre at 613 St. Mary’s Road. The tour will stop at Catherine Place, 190 Raymond Place; Columbus Manor, 303 Goulet St.; Agape Villa, 395 Beaverhill Blvd.; and Villa Beliveau, 500 Beaverhill Blvd.

A tour of Fort Garry, Linden Woods and South Tuxedo facilities runs Aug. 26 and will include stops at Rotary Villa, 528 Hudson St.; Portsmouth Retirement Residence, 125 Portsmouth Blvd.; Lindenwood Manor, 100-475 Lindenwood Drive East; and Summerland Estates, 77 University Cres.

Both tours cost $12, including lunch at one of the facilities.

A similar program in the northern end of Winnipeg was an eye-opener for the seniors involved.

“We saw everything from people living in 250 square feet to 1,000 square feet, assisted living, independent living, life-lease,” says Mary Orbanski, a participant on the tour in north Winnipeg.

Seeing the variety of living arrangements available, as well as the variety of levels of amenities, provided her with important information for the day when she makes the decision to move from her home.

“I’m not there yet,” she notes. “I became more aware of the choices.”

Seniors making decisions about housing have a lot to consider, including budget, health, lifestyle and social needs.

Though the first housing tour showed participants much that is new in the field of seniors’ housing, it also confirmed a lesson that is as old as society itself.

“The more money you have, the better you have it,” says Orbanski. “I’d recommend the tour for anybody.”
