Hey there, time traveller!

THE name says it all: Because we care. That’s the program under which the employees of each Canada Safeway store choose a community charity to support each year.
On Sept. 9, the Crestview Centre store at 3393 Portage Ave. presented a total of just under $10,000 to Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba. The money was collected during this year’s campaign, held from February to June.
“Early in the year, each store picks a charity and the employees rally to raise money for the cause,” says Brent Harrison, manager of the Crestview Safeway. “A few organizations make presentations, and the employees choose the cause. There are a lot of good causes. With Hospice, everyone could relate. We all end up there (needing their type of services as we or a loved one comes to the end of life). And in our area there is an aging population, so this is a good way to support the needs in our community.”
Safeway employees got involved in the fund and awareness-raising for Hospice in a variety of ways. They held used book sales, 50-50 draws, hotdog sales and a garage sale. The store also gathered collections in donation cans.
This was the first year that Hospice has benefited from the Because We Care program, and executive director Margaret Clarke says she is thrilled with its success.
The money will be used to help enhance Hospice’s resource centre, adding books and videos to their collection. The centre, located in Deer Lodge Centre at 2109 Portage Ave., lends materials free of charge. Some money will also go toward bereavement support walking groups and the community hospice volunteer training program.
“Reading about the experience of others can help people on their grieving journey. When we lose a loved one, there is a deep cut in our spirit, and a good listening ear (like that of a volunteer) offers comfort and support,” says Clarke. “We are here so people don’t have to journey through grief alone.”
