IT has only been a few weeks since Baraka’s Pita on north Main Street has opened its doors, but the Mediterranean restaurant and bakery has garnered a reputation usually reserved for the city’s long-time restaurants.
On any particular day, you will find the place filled with happy customers, and Sami Aboumrad, one of the two brothers who own the restaurant, smiling beatifically at them.
Baraka’s got off the ground eight months ago when Aboumrad and his brother Madi Aboumrad moved here from Calgary, with the intention of creating a restaurant in Winnipeg that specialized in Mediterranean food.
Although they weren’t familiar with the city, they recognized there was a distinct cultural and social difference between the north end, which they were eyeing as one potential location, and more trendy areas of town such as Corydon Avenue and Osborne Village.
“It’s been great here. The people in this community have really welcomed us,” he says. “And they have told us that they are glad to see us open.”
No other restaurant is like it in Winnipeg, in the opinion of this restaurateur, whose family moved to Canada from Lebanon 25 years ago.
“People (in the community) have said that they are happy that they finally have something they don’t have (in the south end of the city),” he says with a laugh. “Nothing is this authentic.”
Specifically, he is talking about the pitas, which are baked right in front of your eyes in a huge oven, and the shawarma, which is marinated chicken cooked on a spit, sliced and placed in a freshly-baked pita with condiments.
Baraka’s Pita Bakery is located at 1783 Main Street and is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.
