LOVING Log Homes: Where some people might see the discarded wood planks strewn about construction sites as refuse, Bill Smith sees log houses.

Smith has been re-manufacturing wood since 1983, but for the past few years he’s turned his attention toward creating log homes out of laminated and finger-jointed material to form flat or rounded logs for new-home construction.

The engineered logs are made of finger-jointed lumber end-cuts, sandwiched around a dense foam insulation core.

Karen Swaysland was one of the first to try Smith’s ‘Logsmith’ homes.

“I love the warmth,” says Swaysland of her 2,000 square-foot, three-storey engineered-log home. “Heating costs are low, and there are no drafts. It’s very solid.”
