Hey there, time traveller!

ALTHOUGH Robert Gervais swore that last year would mark the end of his famous Bunny Carnival, the North End resident just can’t give up on the annual party for his furry friends.

After 10 years of considering mingling rabbits and guinea pigs, Gervais has added a paradise “peace garden” to the 11th annual carnival’s mix.

“You’re going to get people and children who are goo-goo over their bunnies,” he says. “It’s a get-together for all pet lovers.”

Gervais expects between 600 and 1,000 pet lovers to attend the annual event, where the 74-year-old provides education and information about the proper handling, training and care of the popular pets in his own backyard.

Although Gervais claimed last year’s Bunny Carnival would be the last, he says he caved to the popularity of the event and fellow-critter lovers who hoped the carnival would continue.

Since this spring, Gervais, vice-president of the Red River Rabbit and Cavy Association, says he’s been busy preparing a special garden where he plans to offer a natural setting for his 20 rabbits and two guinea pigs, as well as a place to stay for bunnies whose owners may be on vacation.

With natural plants, grass and flowers, Gervais’ backyard has become a 4,000-square-foot haven for rabbits and guinea pigs to socialize and play.

“There’s no hype to it. It’s all love,” he says.

“There such a joy when you see successful people with their rabbits.”

Meanwhile, Gervais says he isn’t planning on evicting any of his rabbits or guinea pigs from his kitchen, dining room and basement yet.

He says the popular animals are entertaining, smart and loving, and admits he can’t get enough of seeing bunnies and guinea pigs mingle at a party.

“If I give this up, I’m dead,” he says.

The Bunny Carnival is free of charge and runs Aug. 20 and 21 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Gervais’ home at 1092 Pritchard Avenue.
