Insulating an attic always a good idea

QUESTION: My son just bought a house. We noticed on the third level it is unfinished and there is no insulation up there. Should he insulate that area? And would you put the insulation on the floor or up in the rafters of the roof? We were quite surprised to see this, just because it gets very hot in the summer and cold in the winter. What do you suggest? Thanks.

ANSWER: With respect to your son’s home, it would be prudent to install insulation at any location that is common to the exterior or a “non-conditioned” space such as an attic, crawl space or basement. If your son has intentions of finishing the attic and heating or cooling the space, the insulation should be installed between the rafters, but care must be taken to allow cold air to flow between the insulation and the roof sheathing. Soffit vents and insulation barriers to hold the insulation away from the roof are critical to preventing ice dams in winter. If the space is to remain an unfinished attic, the insulation should be installed in the floor — the ceiling of the conditioned space below.
