CALGARY — The Fiskars UpRoot Lawn Weeder is an environmentally conscious gardener’s best friend. And your back will thank you, too.

The long-handled weeder allows you to stand up to the task. Poke it in and the blades close around weed roots. Step on the foot plate, tip it and you pull and pop out those dandelions and other weedy nuisances.

Lightweight aluminum shaft, steel blades and an ergonomic handle.

Price: $49.99. Check at your local Canadian Tire store.

ReelSmart

If you hate hauling in the gritty garden hose, reel in a ReelSmart automatic hose reel, which uses water power to roll in and out of a smart housing — no batteries, electricity or fuel required.

A connecting hose hooks from the unit to a water faucet, and your hose is attached to the reel. The unit sits on the ground or can be mounted on the wall. Move the rewind lever and the hose reel will roll hose onto the drum. The gadget rewinds up to 30 metres of standard garden hose.

Price: $99. Sold at Home Depot.

Drywalkers

A couple bits of fabric — great for saving the floor, and probably a few marriages.

Drywalkers are heavy-duty felt slippers you can slip over dirty shoes or boots, saving you the aggravation of unlacing if you need to nip into the house for something in the middle of your yardwork. No more “just a few steps in” and being chewed out for the muck. The shoes have anti-slip strips on the bottoms, so there’s no sliding contests for the kids.

In large and x-large sizes. Price: $28.50 and $31.50 at Lee Valley Tools.
