QUESTION: I’m living in a new house that is only a few years old, and I have to fix some settling cracks in my ceiling. The problem is that my ceiling has a textured pattern that I can’t imitate. How do I fix this? — Frank, Columbus, Ind.

ANSWER: Spray textures in a can are now available that match many popular texture pattern. Stencils and templates are also available that can be used to create very unusual patterns that you don’t often see.

Since your home is reasonably new, you might still be able to contact the original homebuilder about the finish that was used. If you aren’t sure who built your home then you might want to contact the local building department and check their records for an address or phone number.

Contacting the original contractor will improve your chances of not only getting the right pattern, but maybe even getting the original drywall contractor, who is a sure bet to produce a perfect match.

If you can’t find a matching finish method at your local home centre or can’t find the original builder, you might want to simply redo the ceiling. Sand it, fill the voids with joint compound and then add your own version of the finish yourself or hire someone to do it for you.
