Quarterback Jason Maas throws pair of touchdowns as Ticats beat Bombers 26-11

WINNIPEG (CP) – Quarterback Jason Maas returned from missing one game with an injury and threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats upset the Blue Bombers 26-11 Friday night.

Maas, who missed his 2-6 team’s 29-0 shellacking by Winnipeg last week with a hip pointer, completed 16 of 30 passes for 170 yards and no interceptions. The Ticats ended a 13 game-road losing streak.

The 5-3 Bombers weren’t so lucky on the injury front.

Quarterback Kevin Glenn went out with a knee injury early in the first quarter after being sacked by safety Wayne Shaw in front of 26,521 fans at Canad Inns Stadium.

Glenn tried to return in the second quarter, but was replaced by Brad Banks. Russ Michna had a few series, too. Banks went 8-of-20 for 64 yards and one interception.

The Bombers were also without star slotback Milt Stegall, who sat out because of a rib he injured last week.

The game even included injuries to technology. In the third quarter, Hamilton head coach Ron Lancaster challenged a call, but the challenge was cancelled because the officials lost communications with the video replay booth.

Lancaster took over as Hamilton’s interim head coach July 10 after the Ticats got off to a 0-4 start under Greg Marshall. Hamilton is now tied for third in the East Division with Toronto (2-5). Montreal is first at 7-0 and Winnipeg remains in second.

The Tiger-Cats got TD catches from Brock Ralph and Josh Ranek and fullback Julian Radlein pushed in for a one-yard score. Jamie Boreham booted an 11-yard field goal and punter Pat Fleming kicked two singles.

Ranek had 27 carries for 164 yards. Overall, the Ticats had 169 yards on the ground – the most rushing yards the Bomber defence has allowed this season.

Winnipeg’s scoring came from an Andrae Thurman TD catch, a pair of Troy Westwood singles and a safety Hamilton conceded.

Thurman grabbed a five-yard touchdown pass from Glenn on the game’s opening drive, a score aided by offside and roughing the kicker penalties against Hamilton during a missed Westwood field goal.

Westwood added a 51-yard single midway through the first quarter to make it 8-0, but Hamilton got its turn with helpful penalties.

The Bombers were flagged for a pass interference call that led to Ralph scoring on a five-yard catch at 12:38.

Glenn initially went out of the game for five minutes in the first quarter and was replaced by Banks.

Hamilton responded with its second consecutive TD when Ranek eluded three tacklers with a 37-yard, catch-run score four minutes into the second quarter to go ahead 15-8.

Glenn went in for another series in the second quarter, but was replaced again by Banks. But not for long. With seven minutes left in the second and Banks inconsistent, he was yanked in favour of Russ Michna.

Fleming ended up conceding a safety late in the second after a Westwood out-of-bounds punt angled out at Hamilton’s one-yard line and they couldn’t move up the field.

Boreham, brought off the practice roster for the game in place of Mark Myers, booted an 11-yarder with 46 seconds left in the first half for the 18-10 lead.

Banks played the entire second half.

Hamilton added to its lead with a 51-yard single from Fleming early in the third quarter. Westwood missed a 30-yard field goal and notched a single.

Hamilton had a 62-yard TD catch by D.J. Flick wiped out by a holding call in the fourth quarter, but Ranek had some big runs that led to Radlein’s one-yard TD run.
