FARGO, N.D. — Key dates in the case of University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin and the trial of Alfonso Rodriguez Jr., who was sentenced to death yesterday for kidnapping resulting in her death:
* Nov, 22, 2003: Dru Sjodin disappears after talking with her boyfriend on a cellphone while leaving her job in a Grand Forks, N.D., mall. Police find her car in the mall parking lot.
* Nov. 26, 2003: Officers interview convicted sex offender Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. after getting a tip he was in Grand Forks on the day Sjodin disappeared.
* Dec. 1, 2003: Rodriguez is arrested in Crookston, Minn., where he lived with his mother.
* Dec. 4, 2004: Rodriguez appears in court and asks to remain in custody for his own safety. Bail is set at US$5 million.
* Dec. 9, 2003: Grand Forks County Sheriff Dan Hill confirms a preliminary DNA match of blood in Rodriguez’s car to Sjodin, and says he thinks it unlikely she is alive.
* Dec. 12, 2003: National Guard troops from Minnesota and North Dakota join the search for Sjodin for three days, but report no success.
* March 5, 2004: Rodriguez pleads not guilty to kidnapping Sjodin.
* April 17, 2004: Authorities announce Sjodin’s body has been found in a ravine near Crookston.
* May 12, 2004: Rodriguez appears in court to face a federal charge of kidnapping resulting in the death of Sjodin. He pleads not guilty.
* Oct. 28, 2004: Federal prosecutors announce they will seek the death penalty if Rodriguez is convicted.
* May 25, 2006: U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson turns down a request by defence lawyers to move Rodriguez’s trial to the Minneapolis area.
* July 7, 2006: Rodriguez’s trial begins in federal court in Fargo.
* Aug. 30, 2006: A federal court jury of seven women and five men finds Rodriguez guilty of kidnapping resulting in the death of Sjodin.
* Sept. 7, 2006: Jurors decide Rodriguez is eligible for the death penalty.
* Sept. 22, 2006: Jurors sentence Rodriguez to death.
