THINGS are looking so much brighter for sports gamers on the next-generation Xbox 360.

When Microsoft launched its multimedia machine last year, developers raced to meet deadlines and offer gaming unlike anything we’d seen before. The trouble was, after plunking down $500 on the best hardware available, gamers discovered the first round of software wasn’t all that impressive.

The NHL team at EA Sports has used the ensuing year well, as has the team at 2K Sports, which has made the slightly better hockey game for the past few seasons.

But the 2K guys now take a back seat to EA Sports, something that’s especially noticeable if you fire both up at the same time. NHL 2K7 looks very much like the video game hockey we’ve seen over the past few years, with some innovation, but nothing staggering.

NHL 2K7’s newest feature is the Cinemotion mode, in which you’re literally transplanted into a Disney hockey movie, complete with a dramatic musical score. The music conveys the mood and emotion of the game, and makes for a nice alternative to the commentary.

2K Sports doesn’t change much in its standard control scheme, as passing, shooting and checking are all done with the face buttons, and the standard turbo boost is on the right trigger. But this year, they’ve also added the skill stick, which allows you to perform deke moves with the right analog stick.

There’s also new pressure control, by which you get a defender to shadow an opposing team’s star player by pressing the left trigger. Click it twice, and the defender gets rough with said player, and click it three times for a double-team.

NHL 2K7 would have seemed like a nice polish of last year’s game had I not received and played EA Sports’ NHL ’07 only the week before. The EA graphics seem more realistic, the skating is more natural and the general gameplay is better.
