BURLINGTON, Ont. (CP) – Christie Van Hees of Calgary and American Jack Huczek won the men’s and women’s titles, respectively, at the Canadian Open Racquetball Classic on Sunday.

Van Hees defeated Winnipeg’s Jennifer Saunders 15-12, 15-6 in the women’s final, a rematch of the Canadian championship in May which Van Hees also won. This victory earned Van Hees the No. 1 ranking in Canada.

Van Hees’s win is good preparation for next month’s US Open, racquetball’s premier event that will be held in Memphis, Tenn. Van Hees is the defending champion and will attempt to become the first woman to win three US Open titles. Her first victory came in 2000.

Saunders said afterwards playing Van Hees will help her for the rest of the season.

“Playing Van Hees helps me believe I can play with the pros and win,” she said.

Huczek won the men’s title by downing compatriot Jason Mannino 11-3, 11-5, 11-5.

“I felt like I was playing well,” Huczek said. “I cherish these days because they don’t happen very often.”

Brandi Jacobson Prentice and Alison Schlichemeyer of Saskatoon captured the women’s doubles crown, downing Edmonton’s Carolyn Peddle and American Kwi Spinks, 15-4, 15-10. In the men’s final, Eric Desrochers of Ancaster, Ont., and Mike Green of Burlington, Ont., beat James and Tim Landeryou, both of Saskatoon, 15-6, 15-7.
