HALIFAX — A Canadian destroyer pulled off a complicated rescue Thursday after a yacht with three people on board lost its sail in high seas and heavy winds off the U.S. coast.

A spokeswoman for the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax said HMCS Athabaskan sent a Zodiac over to the disabled boat and ferried the three to the warship in eight-metre seas.

“Everything went without incident, luckily,” said Marie-Claude Gagne. “The three passengers were cold, wet and tired, but luckily no one was injured.”

Gagne said the Zodiac made two trips to the yacht, located about 360 kilometres southeast of Yarmouth, N.S.

A Sea King helicopter was on standby on the destroyer’s deck, ready to deploy if the Zodiac capsized in the heavy seas or if someone fell in.
