July 10, 2004: Truck pulling horse trailer from Ontario stopped on New York side of Queenston-Lewiston Bridge. Inside trailer DEA agents find three duffel bags filled with 431 pounds of raw ephedrine.

Sept. 15, 2004: 250 officers in Canada and the U.S. move simultaneously on 34 homes and businesses, from Hanna, Alta., to Buffalo, N.Y. and Sacramento, Calif., and arrest more than 90 suspects. RCMP called it Operation Diversion; DEA call it Operation Brain Drain. Police say the accused smuggled enough ephedrine into the United States to manufacture $100 million worth of crystal meth a year.

Feb. 14, 2005: The alleged leader of the smuggling ring Rodger Bruneau Sr. dies in his sleep at his British Columbia home of an accidental drug overdose of pain medication.

June 16, 2006: Dwight Mushey, one of the suspects charged in the ephedrine ring, is arrested in Winnipeg in connection to the slayings of eight Bandido outlaw motorcycle gang members April 8 in a rural area in Shedden, Ont. Mushey had been charged with conspiracy to produce methamphetamine.

Sept. 21, 2006: The Crown stays charges against seven people arrested in the massive sweep a year earlier. One of those is Dwight Mushey. The Crown offers no explanation.

Nov. 15, 2006: Emmanuel (Manny) Barbagianis, 44, is found shot to death behind vacant Maryland Street apartment block. Barbagianis faced two charges of conspiracy to produce crystal methamphetamine.

March 27, 2007: Richie Mishal pleads guilty to his part in the ephedrine smuggling in a Sacramento, CA courtroom.

April 3, 2007: Three bit players caught up in the scheme plead guilty to reduced charges in Buffalo, N.Y. Three other accused are set to go to trial April 24 with Mishal expected to testify against them.

April 5, 2007: Crown and defence lawyers are expected to meet in a Winnipeg courtroom in an effort to move the case forward on this side of the border. Two of nine accused have already set a preliminary hearing date –Feb. 4, 2008.
