CALGARY (CP) – Mackenzie Downing completed a sweep of all three butterfly events with a victory in the 100-metre race Saturday at the 2007 Canadian swimming championships.
Downing won the 100-metre butterfly in 59.47 seconds to win all three butterfly races for the first time in her career at the national championships.
She also won the 200 on Thursday and the 50 Friday.
Canadian record holder Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge, Que., was second in 59.78.
“I wasn’t expecting to win all three,” said Downing. “Especially that I wasn’t fully prepared for this meet. I was pretty nervous about tonight’s 100. So I just focused in trying to go under a minute which I had never done before while in training.”
Other winners in women’s competition were Jennifer Carroll of Trois-Rivieres, Que., in the women’s 50 backstroke, Stephanie Horner of Beaconsfield, Que., in the 400 freestyle and Elizabeth Wycliffe of Kingston, Ont., in the 200 backstroke.
Winners in men’s competition were Callum Ng of Calgary in the 50 backstroke, Ryan Cochrane of Victoria in the 400 freestyle, Joe Bartoch of London, Ont., in the 100 butterfly and Keith Beavers of Orangeville, Ont., in the 200 backstroke.
