BERLIN – Eight-time Olympic gold medallist Birgit Fischer is going to skip the Beijing Games.
The 45-year-old German kayaker, who has also won four silver medals, has competed at six different Olympics but said she wouldn’t be ready in time for the 2008 Games. “I’m sorry for my fans, but my decision has been made,” Fischer told Germany’s Info-Radio on Tuesday. “I don’t have enough time for the training which would be necessary for a successful start at the Olympics.”
Fischer made her Olympic debut at the’80 Moscow Games, competing for East Germany. She represented that country again at the’88 Seoul Olympics after sitting out the’84 Los Angeles Games because of the Soviet Union-led boycott.
She competed for Germany in’92,’96, 2000 and 2004. Fischer has also won 27 world championship titles.
