Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 17/05/2008 (6623 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
Dear Mike,
I enjoy reading your appraisals in the Winnipeg Free Press and was wondering if you might be able to help me identify and value a miniature sewing machine (it actually works). It was found in the basement of the Dauphin Singer Store many years ago. I do not see any kind of label on it other than a serial number that is stamped on the silver face plate (below the needle), which is No. 34369. The machine also has a clamp for anchoring it to a table or whatever.
Thank you so much for taking time to read my e-mail. I appreciate any information you might have. I would also welcome any suggestions that you might offer as to where I could search for more information.
Sincerely,
Geri G., Dauphin
Dear Geri,
I have been asked the question many times: Is this a toy or adult sewing machine? These are actual working miniature model sewing machines. When they are found with their original boxes and instructions, they depict children sewing.
Your toy appears to be made by the Muller toy company in Germany in the 1930s. There is a great book called Toy and Miniature Sewing Machines by Glenda Thomas that is the best reference written on this subject.
Toy sewing machines are all collectible. Value is based on age, condition and rarity. Your machine is in excellent condition and would sell for $90 to $125.
Mike Huen is an antique dealer and owner of Mike’s General Store in Winnipeg. If you would like to have an item appraised, please include a photo with your question.
