Small sextant worth big bucks
Hi Mike,
I have this pocket sextant that had been my grandfather’s. He was in the British Imperial Army and served in Bermuda, Jamaica, India and Africa.
I do not know too much about these. What can you tell me as to how old it is or what it might be worth? There is some writing on the top: “Bailey, Fenchurch St London.” Scratched in the lid is “6857 DNI.”
Thanks for looking at this.
— Jan U., Winnipeg
Dear Jan,
A sextant is a surveying instrument generally used to measure the angle between any two objects. The sextant you have should be approximately 7.5 centimetres in diameter. It was popular with the military due to its compact size. Sextants of this style date from the mid-1800s. It’s important that it’s in working condition and that the internal mirrors are not cloudy. It is nice to see it has its original case.
In excellent condition, it would sell for $600 to $800.
