Hey there, time traveller!

It’s so hard battling your friends,” said Brad Kirton Thursday. “It’s just so hard.”
Minutes earlier, with tears streaming down his face, he had sank to his knees on the 18th green at Breezy Bend Country Club after successfully defending his Manitoba Mid-Amateur golf championship, holding off Peter More and Garth Collings.
“Wednesday I wrote down on a card five things I had to do,” said the Pine Ridge member, who shot a two-under-par 70 to finish at 6-under 282 over the 6,701 par-72 course.
“They were, I had to believe, keep faith, keep confident, trust what I was doing. There was another that I can’t remember right now, but it was just something that put me at ease all day. It let me do what I had to do, and focus on getting it done for myself, and not worry about anyone else.”
It’s been a whirlwind season for Kirton.
Thursday’s win capped off a Triple Crown year that included the Manitoba Match Play championship and a repeat as Manitoba Amateur champion.
At the same time, he didn’t so much win as More lost yesterday.
The two were tied at 6-under when they teed off on the 470-yard par-four 18th. Both Kirton and More, who eagled the par-five second and birdied the ninth, 10th, 11th and 15th, were on in two with Kirton looking at a 12-foot putt.
More had a 60-foot gap between his ball and the pin. Kirton two-putted for par, but More came up about four feet short on his first attempt.
Now, needing par to force a playoff, More missed and made bogey to finish with a 68 and 283 total for the tournament.
Collings of Breezy Bend, who won the mid masters title, shot a 73 to finish third overall at 287.
“I played well today,” said More. “I made some putts, hit a few more fairways, but I just three putted at the wrong time. That’s the way she goes I guess. I’m not disappointed. Shooting four under par any time is pretty good.”
“Oh man, can he play some golf,” said Kirton of More. “My hat’s off to him, he’s a hell of a competitor.”
Kirton and More qualify along with Collings and David Lavallee of The Links at Quarry Oaks to represent Manitoba at the Canadian mid-amateur championship Aug. 18-22 at Qualicum Beach, B.C., on the Pheasant Glen Golf Resort.
Lavallee finished fourth after shooting 71 for a 5-over 293.
