REGINA – Regina fire officials say a massive fire that has left 20 families homeless was sparked by a cigarette.

They say the fire ripped through an apartment block yesterday. Investigators say a man refilling a butane lighter accidentally sparked the fuel with a lit cigarette.

The blaze spread quickly, destroying four apartments and leaving 16 with extensive water and smoke damage.

Seventeen of the 20 tenants do not have insurance.

Property managers don’t know if they will rebuild, and losses are estimated at between $2 million and $4 million.
