LEXINGTON, Ky. – Canadian pacing phenomenon Somebeachsomewhere won a US$134,000 division of the Bluegrass Stakes at The Red Mile on Saturday in a world-record-equalling 1:46.4.
“The Beach” took command of the field as soon as the gate folded, and regular driver Paul MacDonell of Oshawa urged the three-year-old son of Ontario sire, Mach Three, through fractions of 26.4, 52.4, and 1:19.2 en route to an unchallenged victory over Mystery Chase (Brian Sears) and Dali (Luc Ouellette), both several lengths back.
The effort matched the all-time world speed record for a Standardbred of any age in racing conditions, set by the late Holborn Hanover.
Brent MacGrath co-owns and trains Somebeachsomewhere for the Schooner Stables of Bible Hill, N.S. The colt now boasts a record of 16 wins and one second in 17 lifetime starts, with over $2.4 million in earnings.
